China's ZTE has set itself the daunting target of becoming on of the world's top five mobile phone vendors within the next three years. The company is currently ranked 6th in the world. ZTE's vice-president of handset marketing Xiong Hui said that the company aims to increase handset production by 60% next year to reach 80 million units.
Mr Xiong told the South China Morning Post that ZTE's target for 2010 was 100 million units which should push the company to No5 in the world.
"We want to be a first-tier phonemaker as soon as possible," Mr Xiong said. "But the target could be achieved sooner if our competitors lost market share faster."
However, the company faces strong competition from local rival, China's Huawei which is also aiming to double its handset production as it seeks to catch up with ZTE, which is currently China's largest single mobile phone manufacturer.

it can be done easily.
first they can lobby china gov to force out all the foreign player with higher tax for phone sell at china. They can cheat on some of the stuff in Olympics opening ceremony so what else they can't do.
Remember the china is the biggest cell market....
Also many years back who dare to use Samsung and LG phone or claiming their phone are great...now....look at who they are kicking the ass on...both moto and SE (Ericsson).
of course sometimes people who get so ambitious can get back fired....remember BenqSiemens.
but then with a dictator gov...everything is possible since everything from better air quality to the opening ceremony of olympics are all done with FORCE tht you can't question.

Do they sell their phones under a different name or something?

If my memory is good enough
ZTE bought a company called UT Starcomm who make phone for one of the china small operator using docomo like technology...PCS if not mistaken
ZTE also making phone for Vodafone...it didn't have its own brand.
but at China ZTE also made CDMA product....
sorry I could be wrong but as far as I know Hua Wei is the biggest player for china while ZTE should be coming close...or maybe ZTE is the biggest?

Do you mean the Vodafone models, eg. the Vodafone 715? Does ZTE make those?
EDIT: No I just checked, Huawei makes those.

I never heard of them either though i doubt it will happen. People in the UK are now far too used to what they know and normally stick to your Nokia or SE. China is only a huge market cos of population and yeah cheap labour but the country does not even have decent 3G yet. Its just another company with high hopes and we will probably hear nothing come 6 months.
