I was thinking of gettng myself a wireless router for my home.. but there is a small doubt thats been troubling me.. I only have ONE laptop curently that I wish to connect wirelessly.. the model that I intend to buy is a Dlink DSL 2640 T ADSL Router..


My question is, is more than one computer required to set up a wireless connection? I mean, cant I just set it up and use my laptop to browse wirelessly. The reason I am asking this is because I have seen the user manual for this router/modem and it has a LAN cable slot and every installation wizard wants me to connect the LAN cable to the laptop. Heck, if the LAN cable needs to be connected always, and I have only one laptop, how will it be wireless? Even the graphic representation of the connection shows a network of three computers.. The modem/router is connected to the ADSL phone line, the LAN cable is connected to one computer and then there is a desktop (wireless enabled), and a laptop connected wirelessly.. my question is.. is the first computer needed in my case? I only have a laptop.

I know that was a tad confusing.. any ideas folks.. normally, I am good at things like this.. but this simple thing seems to have me stumped.

Alright... so what i need to do is.. just enter the settings and I am done? I have tried doing this practically. We use ADSL here and its a PPPOE connection... this means, to connect, I need to dial everytime.. unlike "Always online" DSL. The wireless network is detected by the laptop.. the settings (username and password) are entered corrctly.. but it wont actually connect...

Any ideas folks?

To set up the ip settings on your wifi router you'll need to connect it to your lappy for the first time with the lan cable....then folow the instructions that came with your router....when the router is set up you can disconnect the lan cable from the lappy and use it wirelessly..

There only needs to be a permanent lan connection between your adsl and wifi router...

@deepsme, I am trying this out at a friends place right now.. I have connected it using the LAN cable to my lappy.. and I am able to acces the router settings using the browser.. (you know, the 192,168.1.1 thing..)how do i actually create a dial up (WAN miniport) and make it dial.. wirelessly.. damn I am getting confused.

Go to your wireless routers settings page and there must be a page like WAN setup...you have to enable it and disable connectivity via LAN..

Now i can't tell you the exact instructions because every router has a different settings layout...

Managed to set it up..

The trick was to set the router up in bridged mode.. and then set up a PPPOE connection using the Windows connection wizard.
