I'm actually a photography and music nerd, partly professionally. I always carry a decent digicam with substantial glass and have a Cowon MP3 player which has superior sound quality. I don't need that kind of functionality in a phone. In terms of image quality or music playback quality, pretty much all camera or music phones are a joke. Even the so-called flagships... Physical lens size is the number one indicator for image quality and nothing else.

I want a phone that's a good PHONE, and maybe a portable communicator. By that, I mean: good sound quality (warm, clear) during calls, good contact management, a decent keypad/keyboard that feels good when texting, a screen I can read in the sun, long battery life, and some internet access for email and websites.

So I'm in trouble. Now that I can get a new phone from my provider, I'm clueless as to which one to get. No one seems to be making phones for me. I hate Nokia interfaces, the Samsung Soul is not loud enough, the HTC Touch is a joke, and I'd like to stick with SE, since I like its interface design and I once loved the sound of my Z600. I currently have a m600, which is sort of OK: it has no camera, but it does have an awesome qwerty keypad. However, it has awful sound quality during calls, which is very frustrating.

I don't need 'media functionality' in my phone, I just want a device that's optimised for 'communication'. Is there any hope?

Indeed, what is most important in a cell phone?
For it to play music?
For it to take pictures?
For it to be able to cook pancakes?
Look at all the threads on the first page of this forum. Is there any discussion about how good the reception is? How good the connection is? In how many countries a particular cell phone can be used?
No, it is all about if the phone has a 3.5mm sound connector and/or how many pixels the picture sensor has. And how good the reds are, pink or not.
This has become completely crazy.
It is almost the same as a forum on microwave ovens discussing how many miles per gallon one could make with it.
OK, enough ranting.

communication devices long before mobile phones existed. Their phones
always were good at being just a phone, with good reception and

Well, it seems I'm not alone...

I'm honestly, seriously considering buying an iPhone as a portable communicator (email, websites, heck, even that GPS can be nice), and to NOT use it as a phone, since I don't think it's very good at being a phone. But it'll get some boxes ticked: email, GPS, websites.

And then get some low-end, clamshell-type 2G phone that sounds good during calls (maybe even pick up the old Z600). I bet you can get a decent one for €50 or something.

And then tell all my contacts that I have a talk phone number and and an sms phone number. GREAT! ;-( GRRR!

Interesting... I wrote off Motorola long ago for their user-unfriendly interfaces. The first mobile phones had Nokia with best interfaces, then that position was taken by SE, and I think they are still leading. SE's interfaces for *telephony* are actually very good. I gave my wife that old Z600, which she only uses for... phonecalls (!), and she loved its user friendliness from day one. Never asked me a single question about it...

Now gimme a decent 'call speaker' and long battery life! AH!

I've always enjoyed having phones of different brands and, compared to other brands, Moto's earlier interface indeed was a bit complicated, but the newer is better. My Motos had/have excellent call quality, though imo SE still has the best user interface.

I too am partial to the SE interface, however I bet the topicstarter isn't. After all, modding and themes don't infuence the call quality much, there's just looks if you please.

Anyway, I've heard claims the Sonim XP might have sound quality (speaker and ringer, designed for noisy areas), but not ever having seen it irl, I cannot confirm.

My bf uses a nokia 8120 still, it works great for making calls. Its dualband though, and that's why it'll have to go within a year (prior to USA trip to his sis).

So call qualities, volume, speaker, what else do you want or expect from your phone?
Example such as the dualband/multiple band, or bluetooth, or whatever else you might want in order to make your calls?
