This is a thread for the Dead Zoners.

Carkitter linked to a brilliant article in the X1 thread that explains there is a dead zone in the market which is the segment where the three main consumer user groups of information, entertainment and communication overlap. http://mobileopportunity.blog[....]martphone-and-mobile-data.html

Some people want a mobile phone that has "everything". Information (web, office apps, pda), communication (calls, sms, email, contacts) and entertainment (web, camera, music). An electronic swiss army knife that has all the latest electronic gadgets available in one package.

Traditionally manufacturers avoid this segment as it has high input and low returns. So there is a dead zone.

The current purest example of a Dead Zone device would be a handset with GPS, atleast 5MP camera, qwerty (button or touch), touchscreen, wga or greater display, vga recording, memory expansion, HSDPA, tv out, multi-touch, A2DP, and bt gprs modem or PAN functionality.

In reality no such device exists. In practice, any phone that has atleast 80% or so of the features on the above list falls within the dead zone.

The good news is manufacturers are steadily introducing more and more dead zone devices as they realise the potential for the dead zone market is much greater than they anticipated.

So this is a place to discuss the dead zone. What is the dead zone? Are there any true dead zone devices? Do we need dead zone devices? What are the best dead zone devices available? Or anything you wanna discuss about the dead zone

I know, it's a paradox. If I tell you the secret it may undo the laws of space and time.

Actually it's a dead zone because it's under serviced, not because it's compelely dead.

Add decent Gaming to that list and the device might as well be welded to your fingers.

Hi all,

Well as someone that has searched in vain for well over 20 years to find the ultimate convergence device before we gave it a fancy name.

IMHO the device that has come closest to all of the above requirements love it or hate was the Nokia E90 but at a price of it's size. Although it only had a 3.2meg camera it is a good one and whilst some may want a touchscreen not all of us do need or want one so i don't think it's correct to include that on the spec sheet IMO.

I have now given up on the one device does all philosophy and am returning to a two device strategy to achieve what i want. My current Blackberry Bold does some but not all of what i want, it has a great PIM and E-Mail functionality along with a great Music player and screen for watching short Videos. But i am not that impressed with the Web browser or the screen size for Web browsing or watching a whole Film. So am i just about to but a Nokia N800 Internet tablet to get a 4.13" 800x480 screen for Web browsing and watching Video's and generally to have something to fiddle and play with as the BB turned out to be just so easy to pick up and use with no learning curve required and i want a challenge from a device. When it arrives i will report on what i find and if it gives me the great combo i am looking for or not. But i would say like always just because a device or combo of devices is best for one or some of us it won't ever be for all of us IMO.

Marc

Yep, gaming comes with the application platform, but you are right. Gaming should be a specific item on the list of a true dead zone device.

As mentioned in the article, the vast majority of gamers look for dedicated platforms, but that will change as mobile handsets get more powerful.

@dogmann, I agree with you about different devices for different people. The point of a purest device is that it has everything. Anything that is less than that is catered for already so is not in the "dead zone". But in practice as I said there are devices that fall in the broader dead zone. This is because some people's information, entertainment and communication needs can be met with an existing device. But look at it this way also: under that criteria, you could class a W200 as a dead zone device since it can browse the web, play music, take photos and has an organiser.

So in practice I define dead zone devices as phones that have some form of qwerty whether a touchscreen or buttons, not necessarily both, but fullfill the other requirements in the list with no more one or two omissions, and that's still in the zone.

The article was written in early 2007 i think, the mobile market has moved on a pace since then, it's a lot less fragmented and segmented these days, devices like, Omnia, Diamond, and perhaps the new HTC HD can be all things to all people, it just depends to what extent you can endure compromise in certain areas.

I agree, but there is still no phone that completely fullfills the dead zone criteria. There are still a small group of people who look at the phones available and wish they could meld 2 or 3 phones into one to get all the features they want.

These are the dead zoners.
