O2 Stops Offering 12 Month Contracts

Move reflects broader tendency towards 18-month contracts

O2 has stopped offering 12-month contracts for customers across all of its handsets.

The change will apply to both of O2s consumer channels: its own stores as well as Carphone Warehouse stores, and online and telesales.

The move reflects the broader tendency towards 18-month contracts within the market. Recent GfK statistics show that 18-month contracts dominate the market, with over 84% in July.

Most networks have tried to discourage 12-month deals by either not offering the most attractive handsets for free or by having less attractive line-rental bundles.

People who have 12mths plans with 02 will they be allowed to keep those still then or will 02 try and make them move?

they tried to move me off my old genie tariff that many times,
I couldn't use GPRS or send MMS that got to me after 7 years

btw if they do this then the other networks will probaly do the same hmm

Not sure, I suspect new customers won't be able to get them. 18 months is too long I think.

18 months isn't that bad ive got 8months to go on mine,
I have no need to upgrade my phone anyway.

Vodafone nearley stuffed my contract upto 24mths which resulted in problems when I cancelled that but im glad im down to 18mths again

btw Sim only is a good deal now im thinking about that myself cos it costs less and you can cancel anytime much better then being trapped!

I'm on Sim-Only, but it's only cheaper if you've got the phone to begin with obviously.
I personally think 18 months really is too long. A lot of handsets don't last the full term. I have friends who's phones (not to make generalisations here, but they are all Samsungs!) have died on them after 12-14 months. And of course, their insurance doesn't cover them after 12 months!
Unless I had the option to change my handset at 9 months, I wouldn't take one on.

Their website has only been offering 18 and 24 month contracts for a while.

sim only deals personally i think are great. I am thinking of sticking with my k850i through the 2 year warrenty and go for sim only when it comes to my renewal in May next year, unless a really great handset is out, then i will go for a handset deal.

18 months is a bit too much imo, whats wrong with letting the customer choose and pay more/recieve less value if they want?
