Hi, in the specs of the K850 i see several UMTS frequencies listed, but will this phone work in Japan? So far I haven't been able to find out which network options are needed for this to work. So in short: will the european sold K850i work in japan?
Thanks

Hi!
according to the S-E site -
* EDGE
* GSM 850
* UMTS 2100
* UMTS 1900
* HSDPA
* UMTS 850
* GSM 900
* GSM 1800
* GSM 1900
I think it will be ok for you to use in Japan.

yup, no problem in bringing your phone there. you'll be using their 3G networks. if i'm not mistaken, it's the 2100 freq.

My phone service provider states that the phone needs 'IMT-2000 Core Band' to work. No idea how that translates to UMTS though.
So the UMTS 2100 is the one that should work?
Great! saves me from hiring a phone there. On the other hand the rates are quite er... challenging at €2,5/min

@Webalistic
if your phone is not locked to your home network, i suggest you buy and use a prepaid simcard in japan. much cheaper than using your own line. roaming may be convenient, but the charges are way too expensive.

Japan no longer offers pre-paid phones or sims to visitors staying less than 90 days, even though their website say so. Its due to the fact that alot of crimes started being committed using these type of phones. You will need an alien registration card and passport to entitle you to get a pre-paid phone.
It will mostly likely be cheaper to rent a phone from Softbank thank using your phone in Japan to be honest.

My K610i (UMTS 2100 MHz) worked very well in Japan (DoCoMo network).

Allright. I thought it might be of some use to others to mention that my European K850i worked fine in Japan. Both calling and sending SMS worked without any problems. Even internet access was possible.
It might come at some cost though as the phone had some problems with humidity I think. The 3 touch spots started acting on their own and in total about 10 gibberish messages have been sent to myself as a result. *sigh*
Fortunately it didn't decide to activate a master reset or something like that.
