Sony Ericsson is taking its cameraphones very seriously. At the rate we are going we will probably have most point and shoot cameras replaced with cameraphones. We’ve seen plenty of cell phones sporting a rather good built-in camera. 5 to 8 megapixels is what we’ve seen so far and the 9 megapixel camera module is waiting to be inserted in various phone. Sony Ericsson is also rumored to launch a 12 megapixel camera sometime in 2009 so it’s not quite a surprise that the company wants to improve the features of its cameraphones.

Besides the rising megapixel Sony Ericsson is working on shutter and autofocus speeds, zoom and many others. They have a recent patent which talks about better zoom functionality. Sony Ericsson wants to make the zoom automatic by following the movement of the handset. Moving your hand away from your body and closing it to your body would automatically make the device zoom in and out. That means future cameraphones should be aware of their movement and of their current position related to you. That means future cameraphones will have accelerometers and proximity sensors. So let’s see a working prototype already!

Well increasing the autofocus speed would be great. Everyone would like to take pictures faster.

This is cool.

As long as it allows me to choose what to zoom on, my P1i autofocuses on background when i want it on foreground and foreground when on background

Mine is working fine (P1 also) but sometimes it knows to mess up the picture if you aren't careful where you are focusing. In fact all autofocus phones are like that.

Combating the accusations of a lack of innovation perhaps?
I think these ideas are great and show smart thinking is alive and well in SE.

I've always liked how SE phones can be setup and adjusted to the user with multiple shortcuts, toolbars, custom ringtones, themes and third party apps like Opera mini and MyPhoneExplorer. Now it appears the phones will take recognising user movements to the next level, past that of Pedometer and ShakeMe. I think it's a good thing.

And what about the magic words: "optical zoom"?
