What was the first touch screen phone? With the touch screen market starting to take off a bit more with the iPhone, Nokia 5800, Samsung Omnia and now the BB Storm, it made me think who did it first? I know Sony Ericsson were there early with the P800 but did anyone else beat them to it?

hmmm. the earliest ones I can recall immediately were actually the original iPAQ's which had a GSM sleeve with which you could make phone calls and you dialled the number on screen

btw, sleeves were the accesories for the original iPAQs, and the iPAQ slid into the sleeve and gained that functionality (and extra bulkiness!)

but... I'm fairly sure there was something earlier than that too...

Apple was the first with a touchscreen phone, back in 1983!

You didn't specifically ask for a mobile phone!

I reckon the first touchscreen mobile - or certainly the first touchscreen smartphone - was the IBM Simon. Announced in 1992, sold in 94, didn't last long - http://cdecas.free.fr/computers/pocket/simon.php

And for the record, that Apple phone was only a design concept! Never realised (not until the Iphone anyway).

i remember the days when i was a palm device user (my first pda was the greyscale palm iii).

i don't know if the visor phone attachment qualifies as a tochscreen phone since you attach it to the pda and uses the pda's touchscreen ui to access the phone functions.
