orange 2g & 3g is pretty bad, i get this flickering between the two on my phone, which is awful when you need constant signal for browsing / streaming because the 3g will try switching to gprs & back to 3g.
my o2 signal is more constant & my 3uk 3g dongle works much better also.

I've got an old motorola phone on the orange network and want to buy a sony ericsson k800i which is 3G enabled so has a 3G sim card. I guess this means I can't just put my old sim in the new phone but I'd like to keep my old number if possible. I'm staying on the same network. Does anyone know if this can be done ?

You should be able to use your old Orange sim in a K800i ok (as long as the phone is unlocked or locked to Orange). It may not use the 3G though. If it does not then call Orange and they should issue you with a new sim that is 3G enabled.
