Sorry if I'm being a numpty here...

But I don't understand the fuss about UIQ dying and all that.

As I understand it - it does touch screens best? - but what I want as a user is functionality - i don't really care whether the OS is UIQ 3 , UIQ 2, Symbian 60, Linux, Vista, Windows ME or applemac whatever that is

If SE - or whoever can produce an upgraded P1i that does everything... but just a little better - why does the OS matter? (apart from to the people whose jobs depend on it of course... sorry UIQ encoders )

Genuine question... Not trolling I would like to understand it.

I guess if UIQ goes down the plughole there will not e any further upgrades to our current P1is from SE... but then we knew that already didn't we? - and people like Opera seem to still be supportig us... - Thanks people at Opera!

Thanks

It only matters because so far UIQ was the most advanced smartphone UI platform, and if it ceases to exist then it is not very sure that the upgrade you want will not rather be a downgrade.

I guess its just love for something, no answers here.

there are ppl who love apple, forums of mac lovers, forums of mustang lovers ...and heres a forum of UIQ lovers

Just a place where UIQ lovers hang around discussing thier common passion

the human mind is an amazing thing, once it likes something and is sold for it, it will wage wars (and flames) to support it and take pleasure in discussing it endlessly

Love is not plainly a matter of subjective passion. Also, when talking about technology, the word love does not necessarily cover the base of decision. You can set up your mind by objective comparisons as well. I state that UIQ is the overall most advanced smartphone platform, and this is not a matter of love or taste.

Thanks Zed - that's more what I was looking for...

BUT... at the end of the day these companies only exist to make money - and the most profitable way forward for those in control is the one they take - probably all to do with trouser legs rolled up, dodgey handshakes and free carribean holidays on board luxury yachts! - and HUGE retirement bonuses after the companies merge...

I do care what OS is on my phone.

It defines native set of applications. Caller, SMS, Address book. For a person who does not like installing-reinstalling-hardresetting, native application set IS the phone.

There are strong and weak points in user interface of OSes, and there are "matter of taste" features differing between platforms.
S60 (with touchscreen of course) could be bearable if it featured combined call list (in/out/missed calls in same list), time stamp in SMS list and several other features.
But again the SMS(message client) and address book in UI3 are far from perfect. Sometimes just maddening far And no replacement for message client so far.

But that is my point - that the SE designers who put the combined call list functionality in the phone - could have just as easily provided this for their users whatever platform they were working on...

The touchscreen bit seems to be better in UIQ3 than Symbian 60 at the moment - but with amalgamation of the best bits of UIQ3 code and other Symbian codes in SF will this not be addressed?

The problem then being which manufacturer will install the features that you as an individual want in your particular phone...

Sure we're yet to see perfect OS (app, platform, woman )

But as for UIQ mail client I am ready to argue (to flame ?) it's bad design and not personal tastes (unless one loves phone screen blinking at him for seconds during routine actions).

When you receive an SMS and click to see it, screen is repainted several times. As you're done and click Back button, the show is replayed.
When there're lots of SMS (I try to keep them below 300) the repaints take time. I see how they clear the list and fill it from scratch each time they show it - never heard of data models in GUI (like JSwing/Qt4) or never had time to implement it.
Selecting several SMSs is another story - you should have very accurate hand.
