havent been here in ages, naturally i thought of you guys when reading this...sorry if already posted:

Sony Ericsson plans to slash the number of handsets in its mobile phone line-up following its first quarterly loss in more than five years.

Dick Komiyama, Sony Ericsson's President, said the company will cull 20 per cent of its current handset range, according to a Financial Times report.

Sony Ericsson's website currently displays a range that extends to 73 phones. It's not clear whether the company will drop 15 of them straight away or manufacture fewer models going forward.

Either way, Sony Ericsson will be left with 58 phones on offer, which is barely better than 73 if you're trying to stop confusing consumers with an overwhelming range of models.

We'd argue that the company should cut its range to 20 per cent. Does the world really need any more Sony Ericsson models than that? Or from any other vendor, for that matter?

In addition to the 20 per cent range reduction, SE will also merge its three handset development divisions into one. Both changes, Komiyama claimed, will help the company reduce duplication and improve efficiency.

It's a good first step, this year except for the camera and some extras all the phones were the same inside.... Let's see what will happen now?!

Hmm... I disagree on both points.
SE need to get rid of the duplication in the low and mid range, there's far too many similar phones to confuse buyers.

SE should also get rid of the regional variations such as Z770/Z780 and G700/G700 Business Edition and put all frequencies in their phones. There are too many phones with single band HSDPA but tri/quad band GSM.

Agree there, regional variation shall be removed.. most of them are same phone..

There is C902i C902c.. one with 3G one without.. I mean whywhy.. It's same phone.. same as C905, i a c.. they learn something from it...

i agree with you all....................High increase in oil price food electric etc....People can hardly buy food and clothes much less phones so i agree with you my (i cant pronounce your name) lol

I think the Chinese versions have Chinese symbols on the keys, I don't mind a different version for that reason but I do think they should recognize that it's a global market and therefore they should produce global phones especially if they intend to bolster their mid and upper range as planned.

Why don't they just have a different keypad for chinese but same version.

Giving regional variations different suffixes makes sense to me but keep the same model names. At least then you know its the same phone but for a specifc market.

I agree that SE should just knock down to a few models. I'd say 15 models at any given time is enough.

Like 1 in each category (low,mid,high) for each of the different types(cybershot,walkman, smartphone) maybe a couple of good all rounders.

Why is there any need for more?

A low or mid end smartphone might be snapped up by lots of people. Doesn't have to be all singing and dancing.

Just my few pennies.

they need far more range than that. If they only had 1 phone in each class buyers would be left with no choice. Only those who happen to like the phone in a particular class will buy SE, many other buyers will go to other brands for more choice.

I actually think the widening of their range was a smart move, even if they widened a little too far. I think a 20% drop is about right.

Regional variations i think should be implemented by SE especially on the chinese market.

For example, the C902i and C902c the term "c" is used for chinese market since 3g Network on china is not allowed, SE produces a variation for chinese consumers for be able to use it by them and their not going to buy the "international model" if they do so then they not obeying the the Law.
