My N71 never ever took images over 500kb, at best they were at 450. The res was 1600x1200. Now my i450 which has a much worse camera can take pics up to 1Mb at 1600x1200. Is it just bad software on samsung's part?

The JPEG file optimization algorithms in the Nokia were probably a lot more efficient. On the other hand, it could be that the Samsung uses lower compression ratios and no sub-sampling to store a higher degree of information and subsequently have a higher quality setting.

it may be so crap a sensor that applying any kind of NR (usually in the form of compression) robs too much detail.

Maybe both of them are right! My SE K810i use to capture photos at 3MP (2048 x 1536) at a size of less than 500kb! And a 2MP ( 1632 x 1224) at only less than 300kb!
