Can order my new phone in January so have started looking at what is out and due for release etc. I think this time I'd like a touchscreen. Ones I have seen are; Apple Iphone 3G, Samsung Omnia, Sony Ericsson X1, and HTC Touch HD.

Prefer to stay with O2 so that rules out HTC as its orange exclusive apparantly. Which do you think is the better phone? My main uses for a phone aside from txting and ringing, is watching films and internet. So would like a crisp clear screen and decent sound quality from the speakers.

Currently using Nokia N95 8GB, so would like at leat 8GB again but the more the better.

Any help would greatly appreciated.

texting is a breeze and the automatic word correction is fantastic, you can trust it alot more than t9 and I rarely look at the screen these days.

the screen is a great size for watching movies, and for internet and the screen is indeed crisp and clear.

I haven't seen the omnia, nor the HD of course, and windows mobile does a reasonable job at playing media, but it still doesn't compare with the iphone experience.

The speaker may let the iphone down a bit but how often do you not use a headset or an external speaker pod?

I only really watch films or tv episodes when I'm wating for a client to turn up to a house i'm showing them round. Sometimes ppl turn up 10/15mins late so I can get a bit of a film watched lol.

Must say though I do like the apps u can get for the iphone.

something with a slide out keypad does do wonders for ease of texting, multimedia wise the iphone does a good job, but i would go with the X1 myself, i'm hearing very positive things all round about it.

@NightBlade, please elaborate on your reasons for saying that? I can type as quick, if not quicker, than I could on the TyTN II (for example), and get more of it right first time

@MWEB, my suggestion was based on having used the iphone and the X1. While the X1 is definitly one of the better WM devices I've had, the keyboard is on the small size and things like the TAB key get in the way of where I think the keys should be., and having an inlaid numeric keypad isn't the best either. There's one thing about the X1 that I keep saying and that is they shouldn't have bothered with the keyboard at all. I could type just as fast on the virtual keyboard of the Diamond as I can on the real X1 keyboard

Keypads on non resistive TS devices (iphone) are IMO much easier to use "virtualy" resistive types need a firmer push however Vibey feedback helps a lot.
And with the X1's proper keypad, you don't have to worry about greasy paw prints all over the viewing area.

I once used a friend's iPhone and even simple tasks such as typing a site address was laborious. Mistyping due to the lack of any kind of physical feedback and physcial separation of the keys was pretty common. It was a rather frustrating experience.

Mine would be another vote for the iPhone, the media experience is just fantastic. The screen is absolute perfection, unlike anything else I've seen on a phone, and the video performance is streets ahead of anything WM can muster, in my experience. I don't think it can or will be bettered, to be honest, not for some years anyway.

Admittedly I'm used to phones with pretty poor speaker quality generally, but I'm more than happy with the iPhone's, they do the job very well IMHO. Like any small speakers they could be louder, but then again, it's a phone not a hifi - and you could always hook it into your hifi with the headphone jack if you really need some volume.

As far as texting goes, well I'm sure some people just aren't going to take to it for their own reasons, but actually the on-screen keyboard is a work of genius. Like Masseur, I also had a Tytn II for the last year, and within days of owning the iPhone I'm already texting faster and more accurately on its glass screen than I ever was on the Tytn II's full slide-out qwerty keyboard. It's really best to have an open mind about these things - phone keyboards are *always* a big old compromise, and (for me) the cleverness of the iPhone's software proves that a hardware keyboard isn't always the best solution. It's a shame that, because there's a little learning leap necessary with the iPhone, that isn't always apparent when you first try one out in a shop etc - it takes a little getting used to, and a little leap of faith - but once you get going, Apple's method really works.

i was disappointed when I read the X1 only had that tiny wm sip, but the X1 should be ideally suited for TouchPal or one of the other 3rd party onscreen keyboards?! Even the free touchpal version is better than most ts text entry options incl the Diamond's...IF you give it somme practice. Personally, I prefer a real qwerty like in my old p990 or my current e71
