There's much news about Google voice search on iPhone, but, we already have voice search for the X1 through Windows Live Search.

I'm having a problem though. I can't get the Live Search app to use my internal GPS (I have it set to use GPS Intermediate Driver). When I select "use current position", it just sits there saying "Waiting for GPS...", and after a few minutes just times out.

Has anyone been able to get GPS working in Windows Live Search ?

FOUND A WORKAROUND:
Start Google maps, then choose Menu-->Use GPS. Put Google maps in background without closing it. Live Search will then recognize GPS and base your searches on your current GPS location.

I am, but i dont have x1i . SO cant say anything.

But yeah, this is for sure, the whole world will kno google voice thanks to iphone and not many to live.

Does X1 recognize when the phone is close to your face so u don´t have to push any buttons or worry about touching the screen before saying what u wanna search for? No, it doesn´t. That´s why the iphone´s solution is better .

For the record, Google's voice search for the iPhone isn't out yet (AFAIK), but yes - thanks to the iPhone's interface, it will be a lot easier and more pleasant to use than the WM equivalent. One click to start the app, put the phone to your ear and it listens, put it down and see your results...

With WM it's really more of a gimmick - by the time you've started the app, pressed the button, gotten frustrated with the mic activating too early or cutting you off too soon, you may as well have just gone ahead and typed your query - which is exactly what most people end up doing.

^^ Well, that's not my experience with Live Search or Voice Commander. They give me plenty of time to speak and I don't have to raise the phone to my head either. I can keep my eye on the screen and hands on the keys. And I'm also not limited to using voice only on search. I can launch programs, among other things. I'm sure the iPhone will do it's one vocal trick elegantly though.

I put the whole Google/iPhone thing in the title to attract attention. However, the thread was intended to get a solution to my problem with live search not recognizing my GPS. I guess the iPhone angle backfired on me

Well, voice dialling is already available (for free) in the app store, but as for a voice command equivalent - no, it doesn't exist. Then again, with an interface as simple as the iphone's, who needs it? I can launch any app I want with one finger - to be honest, even in WM I was never quite sure what I should be using Voice Command for. What do you use it for?



That's odd - I didn't have to do anything special on the Tytn II, it just appeared as an option in various places - for example "current GPS location" as a choice in the location list, etc. I don't have it in front of me though so can't recall all the menus off hand... maybe there is a setting somewhere, or maybe the app needs to be updated (by MS) to recognise the X1 as a GPS enabled phone?

PS - just to correct myself, apparently the new Google Mobile app is out (released yesterday) and I've just downloaded it. Not had a chance to give the speech thing a go yet though. According to the appstore reviews it's very American at the mo, which is fine if you're an American but not so good for a Brit like me - apparently you have to ask for a "Gas station" rather than a Petrol station, a "drug store" rather than a chemist, etc etc. Hopefully they're learn to localise it a bit more...

Well, I just tried your "Brit" queries on Live Search and they returned local gas stations and pharmacies (just what you were looking for). So I guess, the Google iPhone app still has some growing up to do. Live Search would work better for you at the moment.
