This started yesterday, was at work making and receiving calls, then when i got home, the phone had no signal, didnt think anything of it as thought it was o2 network being funny. woke up this morning to find the phone still has no service, popped sim card into another phone and full signal!! put another working sim card into the x1 and no signal??? have tried hard resetting it many times and nothing worked. the icon which normally displays the level of signal has an explanation mark, looked at the manual and couldnt find what this means (probably no service icon lol).
if anyone knows how to fix this, please let me know.
thanks!

Yep - the exclamation mark is the WM symbol for no service, not that this helps you much! I think (from memory) it will also show if the phone is off - for instance if you haven't entered the simlock code to unlock the sim, or if the phone is in flight mode (or the phone is turned off in the comm manager, if the X1 has one of those). Perhaps double check you haven't inadvertently put it into flight mode?

If all else fails, backup the phone, and then try a hard reset (means you lose everything in the phone's memory, including any installed apps) and then see if you have signal when it's back to "factory fresh".
If it's still dead, then unfortunately it's probably a hardware problem and you need to return it. If it suddenly works again, then you know it was some kind of software/configuration issue, and can hopefully avoid repeating it (although be warned that restoring your backup will most probably reinstate the same problem).

Oops, sorry, didn't notice you'd already tried a hard reset (are you sure it was a proper hard reset, as opposed to a "soft" reset where you just reboot with the reset button?)
If the problem is still there after a complete wipe of the phone and all its settings, then it's probably a hardware problem
Unless O2 have done something peculiar at their end to block the phone?

Did both soft and hard reset, hard reset was just a matter of switching phone off, then holding the left and right keys under the screen and power on. also tried doing it by clearing storage data under setting to no avail.

Take it up with O2 then... either they've done something at their end to block the phone, or it's a faulty handset

if you go to phone -> menu -> options -> network
and select manual, does it show any networks at all?
also, might be worth checking the band setting in there too although after a hard reset it should be ok

everythings been checked when i select manual network selection, then it says registering with network, then an error comes up saying unable to connect to network, then it suggests turning data connection off which was off in the 1st instance.
