> Opinion: Sony in the PDA Arena

I was unable to browse the net for a day and what do I miss? It's Sony unveiling in the CES convention its new top of the line model, the CLIE-NZ90.
While it was really astonishing to know what features this device could deliver, it's also somehow bothers me that at the rate Sony is producing new CLIE handhelds over the past few months they're starting to look like Nokia. It was only around October 2002 that they released the NX70V and after a span of two months Sony breaks the silence again with the NZ90. A colleague of mine has just got his CLIE-NX70V for nearly a month and suddenly it's not the top of the line model anymore!
It was no doubt that Sony revolutionized the handheld industry by delivering the most advanced Palm OS-based PDA's. One would find the usual set of features and applications plus a whole lot more of other bells and whistles not commonly found in a typical Palm OS-based PDA. The most recent release, the CLIE-NZ90, boasts of megapixel resolution and other features found only in dedicated digital cameras (built-in flash, red-eye reduction, etc), built-in bluetooth, Wi-Fi communications, video recording and an array of other features previously impossible for the OS to handle. Not only that this puts the Palm OS as far as features are concerned at par with the Pocket PC but others would also agree that at the present, no Pocket PC could come close to this new device.
I just hope the Sony would take this same kind of drive and innovation to SonyEricsson. Sony right now holds the title of having the most advanced Palm OS PDA and has maintained the status for more than a year now. I believe that Sony could do the same with SE if only they would. I'm not from SE but I do think that SE needs to improve and concentrate in R&D and maketing which Sony has been successful over the years.
Nevertheless, I still believe that SE would be able to deliver and could achieve its goal of becoming the number one player in mobile multimedia products by focusing on their strengths and improving on their weaknesses.
