Yup there is an alert tone unless you turned it off. Anyway, i'm currently using morange v. It's pretty good. All-in-one app.

Is there one which opos up and puts an icon on the screen, like when you receive a text or call?

I think there's none. If you want, just use My Friends on your phone. Create an account in Yamigo or MobJab.
