Sandisk to try to extend physical music sales-how else-with mem. cards...

Sandisk has begun selling micro sd memory cards with music albums loaded on them. Sure, this has been done before as promotion- but now they have a whole library of different artists and albums to choose from. Each album comes on a 1gb card with extras such as pics, videos and lyrics included. There is, however, still a lot of free space. The card comes with a usb adapter so it can be played on a computer. Users are also allowed to transfer the music to their PC. One slotMusic album sells for $14.99.

those were the facts, and now my pesimistic opinion on the matter:

Sandisk boasts about the size and capacity of a mem. card compared to a cd, maybe even thinking this "new format" will take over cds.

Here's where I see the catch- why buy MULTIPLE 1gb cards with just ONE album on them only to have to SWITCH cards to listen to different albums? Sure, I can transfer music from them onto my computer and then put them on one larger capacity card- but will have a bunch of leftover 1gb cards. In my opinion this project will be shortlived - why buy music on memory cards when you can download it AT HOME and then just copy it onto your mem. card?
imo: cd
The idea does have a future though- if cellphones and multimedia players will soon be able to play near HD res. movies, than their harddisks and mem. cards will not suffice for a collection- opening the idea of buying content on them(similar to sony's PSP and movies on umd discs) But these devices would either need a large internal memory or second mem. card slot for your permanent data.

Personally I quite like the idea. Would certainly save space (Could store all 700 ish of my albums on a shelf instead of a couple of bookcases). They would generally last longer as be less prone to damage (scratching, loss of quality etc). Transfer times to pc wouldn't take as long as ripping a cd.

Well that's interesting, if it doesn't affect the price of the cards much.

if they can make players that are nice as ipods, it will take off. if they spread it onto their other micro cards (like transflah, & M2...) even better. but the thing with phones is, most people will buy a card that's big enough & leave it at that - they won't be swapping cards all the time, because it's not just music, all their apps, photos & other files are on there too.

nice idea though.
