The Rise In Software Faults In Handsets

Cases of software faults are rising as more smartphones and touch-screen devices hit the market

The phrase ‘with great power, comes great responsibility’ is an appropriate footnote for the many groundbreaking devices to emerge in 2008 – including the 3G iPhone, Samsung Omnia, G1 Google Phone and the BlackBerry Storm. An unfortunate by-product of the high specification mobile phones flooding the market is an increase in reports of software faults.

A large number of retail staff say that incidents of software problems are rising. So endemic is the problem that many almost expect a new phone to have errors.

Manufacturers and operators claim to be working closer together to anticipate teething problems ahead of a handset launch.

Some retailers claim they are weary about handling brand new phones, preferring to wait a few weeks before stocking them. Some staff that Mobile spoke to say the hassle of handling returns make them think twice about selling a high specification smartphone that has just been released. One Carphone Warehouse staffer says the view is even held by consumers: ‘People now ask us if we think it is better to wait.’

Those of us who've been buying smartphones since before the headline hitters like the iphone, G1 etc know that smartphones have always suffered from bugs - anyone that imagines the old P800 was perfect on release, for example, has some very nostalgia-tinted specs on - all that's happening here is these devices are actually hitting the mainstream, and falling into the hands of sensible people who aren't geeky enough to put up with all the problems and solve their own issues.

What really shocks me these days is the amount of bugs in new featurephones. The W910, K850 etc have certainly given SE a bad name.

talking about stating the obvious.

another way of putting it - the bigger and/or more complex the program gets, the greater the chances of errors/bugs.

I actually find that hackers usually fix bugs. For example. The PSP. Dark_AleX fixed some power bug of some sort which Sony had left.

I don't use macs religiously but i've never really had a major bug on windows. The worst "bug" i had was when i couldn't run windows live messenger on vista X64.
