Hi everyone this is going to be THE place on esato to chat and talk about all things G1 related...
So if you have one or just fancy chatting about them then come on in and talk!
I'll start off as saying that this is one of the best phones i have had in a long time! Even my iPhone has had a bit of a rest since getting this.
Things i love:
* Android - really great system, feels robust hasnt rebooted or frozen yet and just seems to work much like the iPhone.
* Android Market - whilst this is basically the App store for android the biggest difference at the minute is everything on the android market is FREE! thats right even apps like Pacman ( the official one made by namco!) is free and apps which on the iPhone cost a few pounds are free in the market!
* Updates being pushed OTA with minimal fuss. What other phones are as easy to update? Message comes up on phone adv new update available, click accept and 5mins later phone has restarted and new updates are done. No pluggin into a computer or taking battery out an holding buttons just a simple click of a button lol.
THings i dont like:
* Battery life is poor for a phone thats been built up to be a mobile phone with a new 'built for mobile' operating system. This prob is down to its always on nature...
* No onscreen keyboard! this was an issue until i found the free app called CHUMPSMS which includes an onscreen keyboard so all is sorted now but still seems weird it wasnt included to begin with lol.
* GPS. Its hard to get a fix but helpfully the assisted GPS is quick at getting a fix nearby and eventually the GPS kicks in, it isnt any longer on gettin a fix than any other mobile i have used with built in gps but again could be better and hopefully will be once an update comes for it!
Otherall i am very pleased and suprised by this first try for Google and hope they continue to impress with this OS.
Anyone else got a G1 and can recommend any apps?

Little update.... I LOVE IT! this phone is great and here are some screenshots to show how great the OS Android is...
Fist up is the main screen... this is where u keep shortcuts to apps and the time! also have a 2nd and 3rd screen to the left and right but not using them at the mo!
And if you pull the tab up from the bottom u get the menu! This holds all the app links for you to either add to the screen or just use it like a phone menu!
And this is the first screen that welcomes you to the Android Market... Just like the Apple Store but everything is FREE at the minute!
And finally for today here is a shot of the sort of apps u can download for FREE... There are hundreds of apps that do all kinds of things like games, barcode scanners that then search the net for the cheapest price!,myspace mobile, facebook mobile and many manymore lol...
Any questions?

I agree it's a lovely piece of kit, I got mine the day they launched, the very original OS version was slightly iffy, but that soon sorted itself with the OTA update.
Again, as with you, the lack of on screen kb was annoying, but the physical kb is great, and I have the same txt app as you to enable it.
If you want to have a play, try googling Android Cupcake, it's the new branch of android, that has a on screen kb, and A2DP etc, it can be installed on your G1 with some knowledge.
