Suppose it depends on the type of case you are after, I have a few cases, and the best in terms of lowest form factor, best protection and reasonable cost is the SENA leather slip case.
You can get them from the Apple retail stores, or online store, or from SENA website. Only downside is you need to remove the phone to call/answer. It does not affect the sound level of the ringer, as it has a nice little hole punched in the bottom to allow the ringer to be heard.
There are some nice 'slider' cases from people like Incase, including once called the Power Slider, which has a built in extra battery to double the life of the between charge cycles, I use this during the week at work to allow 2 days between charges, without worry. It protects all sides of the iPhone, leaving the face open for use, but with a lip to protect the face.
The other thing I would advise getting is an anti-glare screen protectors, the best ones being the Power Support anti-glare film for iPhone 3G, about Ģ10UK for 2.

I don't use a case but if i was i'd get the air jacket, you get 2 films with it for the screen, and the jacket itself. It's just a plastic clip that it sits in and covers the back and sides, they come in clear and black so if your after something that is hardly noticeable that will do the job perfectly.

Iīve just installed a case called Invisible Shield (by ZAGG). Itīs a īspecial plasticī film that you apply to the front and back of the iphone. Let me just say that the installation is A BARE. The thing is super sticky and itīs hard to get it to set 100% correctly on the iphone because of the bezel, corners and buttons. You get a spray which should allow to īslideī the cover once its on by making it wet but because the thing is so sticky it wonīt slide properly and you have to remove it from the device and keep trying again. (its not because I didnīt use enough spray, i actually used all of it.) Once the case is on it does protect the whole device, front, back, sides, corners and bezel, and it preserves the original look of the iphone without adding any bulk to the device. After installing it i got a few tiny bubbles and streaks here and there but according to ZAGG they should disappear after a few days. Iīm waiting.

If the streaks you are talking about are on the screen, and they are vertical, there is almost no chance of them disappearing. Believe me, i've installed one of these before and the exact same thing happened to me and they dont go away. The best type of shield i have used/tested is the Best Skins Ever, half the price of the invisible shield, you just dont get the fancy packaging or the spray solution (which is just a blob of fairy liquid with water) and this skin doesnt have the vertical lines problem.
Dont get me wrong, i think the invisible shields are fantastic, but for me...only to protect the back. For the front, nothing beats a static screen protector like the one recommended a few posts up - the Power Support Cystal Screen Protector. I couldnt stand the orange peel type effect on the screen with the skins, although it adds a lovely extra grip on the phone on the back. Also i found with the Invisible Shield and the BestSkinEver, was that after a couple of weeks the edges just by the bezel lifted up and attracted lint and pocket dust underneath which stuck and looked unsightly.
And yes, these things are a total biatch to put on too

If you do go for one of these, make sure you dedicate some free time! And go for the BestSkinsEver as it is no different, cheaper and it is definitely cut better than the Invisible Shield. Plus you can choose to just buy the back or the front, or both.
If you're after an actual case with proper protection if you're worried about dropping it, then definitely go for something like the Incase Slider (which i have) or something similar. It doesnt had too much bulk, protects it and allows you to dock it without removing the whole case. Leather cases just arent going to protect it from the impact against concrete if you drop it and you could risk the glass shattering on the front (which is v.expensive to have repaired)

I have also heard of the invisible shield it is the best to protect the phone and not keep it hidden in a case. but it won't protect it from knocks and bumps.
leo i like your case it looks very nice and stylish but i want someone better.

actually, this is not the case i was looking for.
the case that i intended to buy was out of stock so i bought this one instead.
i think i made the right decision.
its kind of stylish and not that common since most leather cases are in black.

Well the case I have is the Griffin Elan Form Black Leather. It's got a polycarbonate screen protector, but it's not the best in the work. The actual case is great, feels good in your hand and easy to hold.
