If Microsoft think they can beat Apple at their own game, they really are deluded. They need to create a new and better game exposing Apple's platform for what it is - limited and proprietary in the extreme.

I don't think Microsoft or Nokia 'get it'. SE does but doesn't have the resources to build a platform as well as handsets. As Apple's spokesman said in that article, Apple are years ahead.

apple aren't(they are quite backward in many ways) years ahead, but the companies that they acquire are. for example, the company that apple bought which developed the technology that apple recently patented. they had the technology, so apple bought them, and hence, the technology now belongs to apple.

neither apple nor microsoft can innovate themselves out of a paper bag, but they teed to acquire companies in order to get a leg up on the competition.
it's sad, i know. but that's the way things are

Well, the device to have these days has a large multi-touch screen, is great at multi-media, has GPS, can sync all your contacts from your work computer/home computer/mobile phone, connects you to the internet and allows you access to the best Apps and Games.

Nokia are trying to copy with the 5800 Xpress Music, Samsung have the Omnia, Palm are closest with the Pre, but although they beat the iPhone in camera specs and BT profiles, etc, they are still miles off in UI, a satisfying customer experience and a realistic alternative to the App Store and iTunes Store.

SE have a great UI, they place customer experience so highly that they actually called their top smartphone brand Xperia, but they do not have the resources to create a competitor to the iPhone SDK and create an App Store to rival what Apple have. That's why they are trying every other platform available - Symbian Foundation, Windows Mobile, Open Handset Alliance because one of these platforms might, just might, manage to make ground on Apple's juggernaut.

300 million + App downloads since the App Store opened last year. This is the new king of software and every Developer everywhere knows it. Hey, even my local bank down here in NZ has a free iPhone Application for me to do all my banking online. It's just awesome! I have a Application (cost $1.29) which informs me of the fuel economy of my car and my wifes car and another (free) which tests the download/upload speed of my 3G and Wifi connections plus other great utilites and Games also, and yet I'm not a Gamer.

This is the future of Smartphones and Apple made it available in July 2008. Where are the iPhone's realistic competitors? Years away! Where are the iPhone SDK's competitor's? Nowhere. Maybe 5+ years away at least. The Palm Pre is the closest (its still a concept ATM) and Palm have alot of work to do to gain acceptance among the general cellphone market. Their devices just aren't 'sexy' enough IMO.

The iPhone UI hooks people as soon as they touch it, but I agree with carkitter, it's the Appstore and fantastic apps being made available for that UI that are really driving Apple years ahead of the competition, even as we speak. As of now, there's nothing to compare to it.

@Brightspark, I don't know if you have seen or heard, but Microsoft are working on their new OS called Windows 7, so far it's much faster than XP and looks much better too!

Before the iPhone arrived people said it would not appeal in Japan because it's not compatible with all the 'digital wallet' stuff that the Japanese use their phones for. Well the iPhone SDK has brought digital wallet type functionally to the western world and in no time at all leapfrogged WM and Java Applications and the lead Apple has is growing and growing. WM can't catch Apple, they need to convince consumers to head down a different road, in effect, isolate the iPhone by providing a user friendly platform with must-have features, without the annoying limitations built into the iPhoneiTunes format. I think the high-powered hardware mentioned in the article is a good start as long as the handset costs are not too high.

Only Microsoft and Google can afford (financially) to attempt something like this but Microsoft cannot got about it in the same way they went about trying to break Sony's PlayStation domination with the X-box. I don't know that they've learnt their lesson from that battle. Certainly the Zune disaster would suggest not.
