Hello all, can some one please explain to me how 3G licenses work. I mean what are the advantages to the operators holding a larger part of the license in a particular country. Just curiosity. I have visited three.co.uk and gsmworld.com but the information there does not answer my question.

Thanks in advance and yes I did try and do a search but nothing came up.

the advantages in operators having bigger licences, or larger bandwidths, is that the larger the bandwidth, the more information can be moved over the network.
the biggest licence, the one that 3 have been granted was reserved for the new entrant to the market, to give them a competitive edge in an already saturated environment.
of the four other licences, vodafone got he biggest, followed by orange, with o2 and t-mobile following with the smallest two.
the reason that the networks want as much bandwidth as possible is that they are bakning on large scale increases in data traffic, and the bigger the capacity, the more traffic it can take, and also the more reliability and quality of service it can promise, which will be a big consideration for buisiness use, which is what all the operators are looking for now.
