A year ago I have bought W880i for myself and W890i for my wife.

As we travel a lot, some times we need to use our mobile telephones to connect out laptops to Internet.
So I have installed in my laptop dial-up modem connection and GPRS connection via Bluetooth via my W880i.
I also made similar configuration for my wife for her laptop and her W890i.
During the whole 2008 all these configurations were working perfectly.

In December 2008 I have reinstalled windows at both laptops and than restored connections for mobile telephones.
I have restored configurations precisely as they were before.
The GPRS connection is working perfectly again, but dial-up connection does not work anymore.

I have the same problem on both laptops with both telephones.
Program shows, that communication between laptop and telephone is established via correct port.
At this moment the telephone must start to dial the number.
On the screen of the telephone I can see that it indeed starts to dial for a second, but then this operation is just aborted.
A few seconds later laptop gives a note that modem can not be initialized.

I tried to make different adjustments in configuration of the connection, but the problem remains.
Now I think that this is the most probably a problem with software of the the telephones.

Could anybody help me please ?
Thank you very much in advance !

Operating platform on both laptops is Windows XP SP3
Bluetooth driver is IVT BlueSoleil v2.3.0
As mobile modem driver I use Bluetooth modem driver for series 800 (supplied in 2 files: SemW800_BT.inf and semw800.cat), appears in the list of modems as “Sony Ericsson W800 Bluetooth Modem”
Actual software version in W880i is CXC1250640 R8BA024 071010
Actual software version in W890i is 1200-9164 R1EA030 080205

I would suggest reinstalling the Modem Drivers for both phones, either from the original discs or from the SE website. I wouldn't use W800 drivers as the W800i is a 2.5G phone (GPRS) while the W880i is a 3G (384kbps) phone and the W890i is a 3.5G (3.6 Mbps HSDPA) phone.

Dear Carkitter,
Thank you very much for your suggestion.

Unfortunately there is another problem, which I faced and I think I solved a year ago.

SE does not offer separate drivers neither for W880i nor for W890i.
They supply a PS Suite software , which, when installed, also installs appropriate drivers.

The Suite installs two virtual COM ports (as I still remember – COM 15 and 16) and installs the drivers on these ports by default.
This program is made in such way that it does not allow any configurations. So, you can not change the default ports or install drivers on any other ports.

On another hand, my Bluetooth driver also works via virtual ports which are COM5, COM6 and COM7.
In order to make the whole thing working the phone modem drivers must be installed on these ports.

A year ago I have found solution by installing separate W800 modem driver to the necessary ports.
By the way - I have downloaded this driver from official SE site.

So, my configuration as it is now: SE W800 Bluetooth Modem COM5 for connection to telephone manager (I use My Phone Explorer from FJ Software), SE W800 Bluetooth Modem COM6 for GPRS connection and SE W800 Bluetooth Modem COM7 for dial-up modem connection.

I was mentioning already that I installed this configuration at two PCs a year ago and it was working very well.

The problem with dial-up modem appeared only after I reinstalled Windows a month ago.
Meanwhile connections to GPRS and to My Phone Explorer are reinstalled and work without any problems.

I suspect that dial-up modem software in both phones still is set to old configuration and is in a sort of conflict with new configuration of PC.

I think that the radical solution will be to reset the phones to factory default.
But in this case I will need to load again all GPRS configurations, and some other things will be lost.

So, probably, someone knows how I can set to default dial-up modem software without setting to default the whole phone ?

Thank you very much in advance,
Vladimir Ejikhine

You shouldn't need to have to install an old driver to get the phones to work. I have always installed PC Suite with no problems having the drivers seen by XP sp2/sp3 even when I was using Bluesoleil and MPE to connect to V640i and V800. My new computer is a Vaio with inbuilt BT 2.1 + EDR running Vista and again no problem just install PC suite, connect Vista to the phone via BT and put the appropriate COM port into MPE. I never actually use PC Suite, Disc 2 Phone or Media Manager which come with the phones just MPE instead.

I wouldn't reset the phones, I would delete the Internet Connections in XP under Network Connections and start again.

I'd:
- Use the PC Suite drivers (your BT adapter should 'see' the devices and pair).
- Enter the appropriate settings into MPE and establish a connection.
- Create new Dial up network connections for the phones.

The issue could be with Windows trying to use your BT adapter but XP drivers are not compatible. The generic BT 1.1 adapter I once had would'nt install the drivers but XP sp2 drivers worked fine. When I upgraded to a BlueSoleil 2.0 +EDR adapter XP couldn't find it but the BlueSoleil drivers overcame that and I used the Dial up network button in BlueSoliel's dashboard to launch the connection.
How about using the USB cable? Any problems with MPE/XP 'seeing' those COM ports?

Thank you very much Carkitter.
I have to take timeout to study your story.

I do not remember in full details how it was a year ago.

I think... I have installed PC Suite.
It has created COM 15 and 16 and installed drivers on these ports.
But BlueSoleil could not see these ports.

On another hand, to make BlueSoleil working I need to go to Extra - Configuraties - Snel verbinden (Sorry, I have Dutch Windows and I do not know how these services appear in English) and to install modem driver to every port I would like to use.
If I do not make this operation, BlueSoleil can see the phone, but simply fails to establish connection.

Frankly, I did not try to install MPE together with PC Suite...
But how it can help ?

During the first start MPE must search for the phone.
At this moment the phone must be already connected to certain port.
In case BlueSoleil does not establish connection, MPE simply will not see the phone.

Anyway,
there should be many ways to establish connection between PC and phone.

The way how I established this connection is probably not the most advanced and best one, but it was working during the whole year.
Now I reinstalled Windows and restored this connection precisely as it was before.
And what I have: connection PC-BlueSoleil-phone-GPRS is working well, connection MPE -BlueSoleil-phone is also working well. Connection PC-BlueSoleil-phone-dialup does not work.

How it is possible ?
Do you believe in miracles?

Just today I have got one suggestion from another forum.
The guy was writing that I would have to install all the drivers over SP2 but not over SP3.
He had an experience of drivers not performing correctly when installed over SP3.

In the beginning of 2008 I have indeed installed all the divers incl. mobile modem driver over SP2.
This is simply because the SP3 was not yet there.
This December I have first upgraded Windows to SP3 and then installed all drivers.

What do you think? Is this is indeed the case?

About using a cable: I have BT built in my laptop and would not like so much to carry cable to all my business trips.

If you have inbuilt BT then why use BlueSoliel? Just rely on the XP drivers, they're good!

It could be possible that installing software over XP sp3 is an issue. Like you, I installed over sp2 and then upgraded to sp3. I would still look first at the settings in the Internet connection and try deleting and recreating them as necessary.
