> Are Networks Being More Cautious With Retention deals?

I wonder if networks are being more stingy - although it seems counter-intuitive given the current climate.
Last year, I was offered a retention deal by Orange of 300 mins 50 texts, £50 re-sign credit and an HTC TyTYn II, which at that time was a top smartphone, on a 12 month contract for £10 a month.
This year I've only been offered the £300 minutes and 50 texts, plus a much lower grade phone. I was quoted something like £150 for the Touch HD. I can get a bit of a better deal for slightly more money on an 18-month contract, but again not with an affordable price for a top phone. This is despite the fact that having consistently exceed my minutes and made expensive calls, my average bill has been something like £60 and sometimes as high as £90.00.
I've asked for my PAC number which gives me time to shop around.
I'm slightly torn about leaving. I've been with Orange for five years and there are certain advantages with them. For example I don't have to pay by Direct Debit, and Orange Care is very good. However on the other side there are cons; locked and branded phones and phones butchered with firmware. I was going to say that this is particularly a problem with Smartphones, but another problem with Orange is that for some reason they have stopped carrying most Smartphones. Does anyone know why?
What are the opinions of the deal I've beeen offered? Does anyone have recent experience of moving from Orange to another network? O2 interests me - particularly given the range of phones and the lack of branding. i.e logos. Do they butcher their phones with operator firmware?
