I have a question regarding privacy with mobile phone networks giving out information to complete strangers. Recently i have been harrassed via my mobile by a mentally ill woman. Cos of this i have had to change my number twice. Now my first change of number i gave out to people i knew i could trust. But somehow this woman got hold of it. I am on O2 pay and go now and they assured me that they do not give out information to anyone. Also that there is no directory of their mobile numbers. They said nobody had called asking about my account. Now what i cant work out is how she could have got hold of my new number without any information. Please can someone advise me on this. Currently so far i have had nothing happen with my latest number. Is it a good idea to get a new pre pay sim and not register my name or address with it? Its very scary how this crazy woman is getting hold of information about me. What are the laws regarding data protection? I am no longer on Face Book because of this situation. Please help.

basically all call centers must ask at least 3 data protection questions before talking to someone about accounts of any kind. if they arent asked and they deal then they have breached DPA>

I thought it was true then. Its wrong for any one to give out information about you. But if that did not happen in my case how would she have got hold of my new number? None of my most trusted friends would have given it her. Are there other ways and means of finding out someones mobile number other than a directory? What steps can one take to ensure she does not find out my latest number? I am very scared of this woman she is a complete head case.

best thing i would try is get a new number and dont tell anyone (not even close friends) give it a few days and see if she gets it. that way u know if someone has given it to her as if no one knows and she calls u she has called the network or ur on a directory of some sort. if she doesnt call u then it was someone you knew who gave it to her. pain in the backside a bit but worth it if she is a nut loop

Well i actually know the person who has been doing this she has been hanging around my work place & knew where i lived which scared me. Her parents are aware of all this but they do not seem to control her very well. If i get another call then its the police i will go to. My new number is now not registered with me at all just using it as it is. O2 reasured me they do not give out information. My friends i have known for over 10 years so its not them thats done this. I have a feeling she has somehow got through the network in one way or another but she has seen me knows who i am its very unnerving. O2 said they do not have a register of mobiles like BT do. In this day & age of data its scary what people seem to be able to do to get to you. But so far it has gone quiet past few days. I do wonder though if someone does call from a with held number is there any way of the network ever tracing it? At first she was using her mobile & i still have got one of her theatening texts she sent to me for back up & i got her number but her parents have taken her mobile of her. After this she started calling from with held numbers. Oh life
