On saturday i ordered an HPM 88 noise reducing handsfree set by sony ericsson for my phone. The idea of course is i can sit down in a noisy place, say a tube train, and have nice quiet music on and some of the noise blocked out.

Now the actual noise reducing part of the headphones work great, fit nicely, I am happy with the build quality and all that, but they have one teeny, tiny, minor design flaw - the headphones have a built in mic that is always on.

The end result is you can reduce background noise to hear your own amplified breathing or swallowing of saliva over your music and I can find no way of actually turning off the mic, be it on the headphones themselves or in the phone.

I have a k850i phone and Sony say that I should hold down both volume buttons on the phone to turn off the mic but that just turns on/off voice activated dialling. How can I turn the mic off? If I can't these headphones are as pointless as the waterproof teabag and solar powered torch.

Did you try turning Noise Canceling off??

Here are the instructions (from http://www.sonyericsson.com/c[....]cessories/hpm-88?lc=en&cc=au):

To switch on noise cancelling:

1. On the microphone unit, slide the slider to the left.
2. Next to the slider, you will see a green light when noise cancelling is on.

To switch off noise cancelling:

1. On the microphone unit, slide the slider to the right.

I think active noise cancelling makes use of the microphone to do its job...

Good luck!
