True. It is not a bug. It is a feature.
When a new PM arrives, the first red link illustrated by your image will appear. The "bug" is that this link will be added even if you already have loaded a page where the "You have 1 new private message" is shown
The title of the page will also change. Useful if you have a minimized window on the taskbar.

The script that does that lags though. I get the new message popup from thunderbird like a whole minute before the 1 new pm message comes up
