Unless GM can make some BIG changes, I fail to see how they can survive.
The motor industry at the moment is like a game of musical chairs; pretty soon the music is going to stop and I think General Motors are going to be the ones left standing. The British and Australian govts better be prepared to prop up Vauxhall and Holden respectively or else there's going to be a right mess. Subaru and Saab could be casualties, will anyone outside Korea miss Daewoo?

I dont think they should, i think this is a chance to provide funding for other ways to power a car, not the combustion engine. And it is possible Honda ha done it.
Im not saying total stop normal car production but develop it so that at least 50% is not run from oil.

Fuel cells seem to be the way forward...
I'm just looking forward to hydrogen combustion, if it ever arrives!
3,000bhp Bugatti Veyron, anyone?

@p900 lover
Alternative technologies are in their infancy, are you advocating the financial crisis as an opportunity to make all car purchasers worldwide guinea pigs for unstable technology? Not with my money, thanks.
It's bad enough spending NZ$500 on a buggy phone. I'm not spending NZ$34,000 on a buggy car. What would the resale value be on that?
Remember, Hybrid technology sits alongside an internal combustion engine in the Prius and Honda Civic Hybrid. Internal Combustion is still the most efficient and practical motive power for cars and trucks. How many Hydrogen / Electric car service agents do you know of? Alternatives are coming but will have to be phased in gradually.
