Shouldn't there be, like the T68i, a clock display when the phone is in standby mode?

no.. the screen shutting off completely is better
it takes a lot of power to keep the screen on..
standby shld save battery life as much as possible..
T68's screen isnt a blood sucker.. so it's ok to just hv a clock..
either way, I hate the clock

Yes, but the HUGE display would shorten the standby-time a bit too much. You cannot power just a small part of it.
The best solution should be a small, separate time-display at the upper edge aligned with the big display
