Take it to the nearest police station.... Tell them that you used it for 2 days, instead of 'handing it in to the police'.

Then ask the police to check the number, and phone the network provider.

Then ask the police and the owner to forgive you for not handing it in immediately.

Is that what you will do ?

Maybe the owner will give a reward for it.

If I could not find his number in it, I would have also tried to ring his/her last dialled number, hopefully to his/her friend and tell them..

Good advice there from Ofiaich.

"No service" has almost certainly appeared because the true owner of the phone has reported it missing/stolen to their network, and the network has frozen the account. The next stage, if it's not happened already, will be for the network to blacklist the phone altogether. This means the phone's unique IMEI number gets blocked not only in that network, but ALL networks, regardless of what sim is inside. There is no way to undo or circumvent this (it's actually a criminal offence in many countries to even try and tamper with a phone's IMEI).

Once it's blocked by the networks it's just a useless, stolen paperweight. Your best bet is to hand it in now before that happens.

I would suggest if it already says "No service" it's already been blacklisted.

As for the comments regarding getting round it, there are ways and people in the know, know. I am and will not spell out anyway, but it's sadly not foolproof YET.

There are means but they're not easy and are expressly illegal in many states like the UK.

There is nothing illegal with certain ways and means but as said people that need to know, know!

but yeah tampering with an IMEI in the UK is illegal, can carry a 5 year term and an unlimited fine.

DO NOT DO IT!

Would be nice to know the outcome of this..

especially if an appreciative owner makes some contact with you !

I know if I lost my phone and it was returned, I would give the person a reward for honesty
