Hi all, my W580i has been acting strangely of late (wont allow copying to M2 when space is clearly available. Tells me 'insert smart chip' randomly-battery removal and replace fix this-but still odd). I will clean all SIM/M2 cxns to see if thats the smart chip prob. I read (under info) that a Master Reset may lose data/settings that came with the phone, does this mean branding? I hate the 'allow internet access?' msgs every 2secs. Has anyone ever Master Reset their W580i? If so, what happens? Many thx!

performing this will get all your data lost. this doesnt include branding as this is not stored in the phones memory but in the FS.

if you want to get rid of the branding, just debrand it using either xs++, far manager + jdflasher(in case it is CID53) or online(not free).

if it doesnt, back up your contacts using my phone explorer#and flash with XS++

Thanks for the replies! You are all very kind.

Regarding the Master Reset: I'm only concerned about my contacts - I backed these up to my PC as a .dbk file using Sony's PC suite along with all themes; DCIM; but trying to back up again, as I add more contacts, doesn't work, I lose the connection to the phone midway through (will try and re-install PC Suite).

My contacts are on the phone cos it can hold a lot of numbers, but they're all backed up to on my 2GB M2 anyway (I keep as much as I can on there. Surely a master reset can't erase the M2, can it??

So, when I back up contacts to memory stick am I duplicating all my contacts from the phone? Seems obvious; but I'm unsure.

And, what exactly is the extent of this Master Reset?

If I did this would it be as if I had just bought the phone, requiring a reinitialization etc? Or would my themes, contacts, bookmarks, settings, apps etc. - ON THE PHONE - be lost (most of my apps are on the M2 except Google Maps cos it works must quicker when on the phone.

I am not familiar with the software for flashing; and I am apprehensive of doing this too. I'm just wondering if I got a lemon this time, or whether it just needs to be 'rebooted'. This is my second w580i and I LOVE it; I chose it over the W760 (it plays .mp4 beter than apple - who created the format!!) - first one was white - aaaah! Please don't ask what happened to it!

Now I'm stuck with black (boooooo) for which I paid FULL PRICE cos I didn't want to try the W760 not even for free! I've read it's slow and I'm sure that it prolly has a few bugs to fix. Plus I like non-3G just fine.

Any advice with Sony's PC Suite program?
I really don't like this ocasional "insert smart chip" message. Hoping that a contact clean will fix this (I'm using the SIM from the older phone - it's one and a half years old and well-used!

Aside, I'm confused: there's storage on: 'phone'; 'smart chip'; 'SIM card' and 'memory stick'
Are SIM and smart ship the same thing??

Also, I'd like to 'clean up' the phone and remove excess crap, hoping to gain more phone memory.
Again, many, many thanks.

Tom
