Sony Ericsson Movie Service Launches But Needs More Titles

Sony Ericsson's 'PlayNow arena with movies' service bundles new phones with a selection of downloadable movies. The service is simple to use, the image and sound quality is adequate, but the selection of movies leaves a lot to be desired.

Sony Ericsson will begin selling W995 phones with the movie bundle next week in Sweden, Norway, the Netherlands, Germany and the U.K, according to a spokesman at Sony Ericsson.

The company plans to launch the service in more countries, but it has no detailed plans to announce at the moment.

Sony Ericsson will offer around 15 movies at a time, changing around four of the selection each month for a total of 60 films available during the year. Each downloaded title can be watched on one phone as often as the users want for up to 90 days.

Movies are first downloaded to a PC and then moved to the mobile phone. File sizes are about 130MB per hour, and since most mobile broadband users only have a limited amount of data allotted per month it makes sense to stay away from over-the-air distribution.

Watching movies on the W995's 2.6-inch screen actually works fine, and the experience is helped by the fact that the phone comes with good headphones. The image quality isn't perfect, but it's nothing that, after a while, distracts from the action of a good movie.

this sounds cool. if they will start with this strategy they'd rather make movie-phones(big screen, large battery life, good audio and video codecs).

This is a nice idea and could be a real winner for them. I think they need to start building in on-phone downloading though, even if it's only certain handsets and wifi only, as the whole download-to-PC-and-transfer thing is a little clunky and could get in way for a lot of people. Obviously it's a necessity for lower-spec phones, but it shouldn't be needed on the Satio for example.

The iPhone will shortly allow movie rentals from iTunes direct from the phone - you'll pay for them, obviously, but on the other hand you get the convenience of choosing and accessing them just when you want them. That'll be the model people will compare this to.

Not really, Boinng. I don't see people who buy the Satio will be that interested in iPhone and vice versa... You, for one, won't settle for a Satio right?

Maybe I shouldn't have mentioned the i-word, I really don't want to get into a whole iPhone vs the world thread, I'm just saying that with Apple being Apple, the idea of just straight downloading a movie to your phone whenever you want is going to get out there, be advertised and be a big feature of the new iPhone, and people will naturally think of that when SE are pushing this feature. I actually think SE's model is good, I'd like some free movies, I think most people would, it just might work a little better and be a bit more fun if you could choose and download them on the phone, and I don't see why the Satio at least wouldn't be able to do that - in fact it should be able to do that just as well as the iPhone.

The service hasnt even started. I guess as it improves they would allow on the go downloading. But for most people, downloading a 300 mb movie is a bit too expensive. Isnt it?? On the phone that is. I have no idea about you guys in Europe, but in India, a 300 mb movie would set me back by about 60-70$

Yeah, I'm really thinking wifi only to be honest. The Satio and the W995 are both equipped with that, so that could work fine?

Oohhk.wifi would be good i guess. But with satio and aino and all the later SE phones with wifi supporting on the air mediago transfer, over wifi, i dont think it would be much of a hassle. But with the app store more prominent, i am sure they would incorporate more features.
