I'm pretty new to using an slr camera but I have been more than happy with my Sony a350 although my brother in law who is more experienced uses a Canon Eos 450d. When I bought my camera I read through all the magazines and watched loads of review videos on YouTube which really helped.

I use a Sony Alpha A300. Great camera, especially as it was only £280 when i got it new. It has built in Image Stabiliser so there is no need to purchase lenses with it built in, saving a bit of money on lenses. Also has flip out screen and the live view is slightly faster to focus than on a lot of other makes in it sector as it works differently to other live views.
It has now been replaced by the Apha A330 which is basically the same but slightly smaller and lighter and takes memory instead of CF. The A330 is quite expensive thugh at the moment as it has only just come out and the Canon 450D is about the same price (£499) but is a slightly better camera.

Dont forget to add in extras like filters, memory and a case into your budget.
