when i open mobireader, a list of "available" ebooks appears in first screen. i have tried saving .lit and .prc files under phone/.../documents, under phone/.../other, and under phone/library (the folder where the default e-book shown in that list is placed).

Mobireader can not read *.lit files.

Well. The 'buildin' book (Aesop's Fables) is installed in the \Library folder. So perhaps that would be a good place?

Mobipocket can read TXT, HTML files and eBooks in Mobipocket format produced from the OEB standard format (www.openeBook.org).

If you can get the OEB format corresponding to the LIT files you wish to read, you will be able to convert them into Mobi format.
