This time we bring you lots of pictures again but with lot more of information. Eldar Murtazin and his team over at Mobile Review have managed to get their hands on the Nokia Rover (RX-51) which will be commonly known as the Nokia N900. Its is the direct successor to the N810 and successor to the N800 and 770 Internet Tablets.

According to Eldar, this is the future for Nokia smartphones - Maemo is replacing S60/Symbian, and the whole Symbian Foundation is just a means to dispose of an OS that Nokia no longer really wants. It's a pretty credible argument to be honest, if generally bad news for SE (which doesn't have an OS of its own anymore).
The only thing I don't get is why, when they had a blank sheet to start with, have Nokia ended up making Maemo look so much like S60? Is this just a means to reassure Nokia die-hards and encourage them to switch platform, or are Nokia's designers really out of ideas for a new interface? Maybe I'm being harsh, there's obviously some new form of desktop/menu system, it just seems like a lot of the icons and buttons are very old-Nokia still. I wish they'd change their font once in a while.
All that said, it's an interesting phone - very much an N97 done right..

The obvious difference is this isn't an "Internet tablet", it's a phone - and a phone of comparable size and design to the n97. It's a weird situation - in the one hand Nokia are claiming that Maemo isn't meant to replace S60, and on the other hand they're releasing a Maemo phone in a form factor that pitches it directly at their own S60 flagship - it's almost like there's a bit of infighting going on.

Maemo is the new high end that S60 really haven't been lately as it have been moving more and more to the mid market.
In a sense this won't replace S60 or coming Symbian^2 as it will actually move more mass market. Imo great thing that Nokia high end again got it's very own OS. Now i would actually want to see the thing where Nokia is good and make lots of different versions of this.
Like thin metallic E series Maemo phone.
