Hello everybody,

As I`m new to this forum I decided to post my question here. I`m looking for a new mobile phone because my old W800i gave up on me and I would prefer a Sony Ericsson model. This is what I`m interested in:

1. Good camera
2. GPS for geotagging (without the need to connect to the Internet in order to pinpoint locations)
3. No touchscreen if possible

Is there such a SE model out there? Or even something from Nokia? I really like the SE G705 and it seems to have geotagging but no GPS receiver. Does it need to connect to the Internet?

I tested several SE model in a store (C905, C903, G705) with the "add location" setting turnded on, took a photo and sent it on my phone via bluetooth. At home however none of the photos had GPS data in the EXIF.

Any suggestions or recommendations would be appreciated. Thanks!

Alex

Hi Alex, welcome to Esato.

All those phones you mentioned are good phones and G705, C905 are well priced ATM too (C903 is new). G705 is a great value phone but W715 is better if you can get it unbranded and at a good price.

I have an iPhone 3G and thought I too would see GPS coordinates in the EXIF data but no; however Google Earth has no trouble recognizing the Geotags...

aGPS (assissted gps) is the best option for a cellphone as it uses celltower info (not the Internet) to pinpoint it's location, but still requires a data download. Satellite based GPS requires line of sight to the satellite so doesn't work indoors or if blocked by the car roof; these are better suited to permanent GPS installations, such as tracking a vehicle, boat or someone out in the middle-of-nowhere.

Basically, look for an aGPS equipped phone and expect to pay for data.

I`m interested in using Apple`s iPhoto as geotagging software so probably in terms of compatibility the iPhone would be the best choice. But it seems too expensive and I don`t really like touchscreens.

Do you think an aGPS phone would work with iPhoto (Places)? Also, how much data transfer would be needed per picture taken? Would I need a mobile internet flatrate?

And what is better about the W715 in comparison to G705? I don`t need a walkman phone as I already have an iPod. Is there something more to the W715 beside its walkman capabilities?

Thanks again and sorry for all the questions.

Unsurprisingly, the best phone to work with a Mac would be an iPhone...
I don't use a Mac personally, I use a Vaio so the only experience I have with Mac software is the awful iTunes application that mismanages my iPhone.

G705, W705 and W715 are all variations on a common theme, of which W715 (a Vodafone special) is regarded as the best because it combines the aGPS of the G705 with the of the W705 and the styling is arguably better as well. In NZ, the C905 (sold by importers) is actually cheaper than the W715 (sold by VodafoneNZ) but in Europe the reverse is probably true.
C905 v W715 v G705 comparison
