I had the same problem twice. You need to uninstall the drivers. Do the following:
Disconnect your phone from computer.
Create a system restore point.
1. Control Panel > System > Advanced > Environment Variables
2. In the lower pane (System Variable), create 2 new values
Variable name: DEVMGR_SHOW_DETAILS
Value: 1
Variable name: DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES
Value: 1
3. Click Ok to save
4. Control Panel > System > Advanced > Hardware > Device Manager
5. In the Device Manager window, click View and then 'Show Hidden Device'
All devices not connected to the computer should be visible now.
6. In the device list, expand 'Universal Serial Bus controllers'
Right-click and uninstall all 'Sony Ericsson....' and 'SEMC flash Devices'.
Reboot your computer and launch SEUS for the update.
The other time it didn't work was because the USB cable extension was damaged. Tried without the extension or another USB port with success.

Unplugged your dcu cable, run CCleaner, repeat the SEUS's procedure and make sure to firmly hold the C button for 5 seconds or more...
