hi,
whenever i use the default browser on my sony ericsson phone to downlaod a file i get a 'operation failed' message. please advise.

When the memory card is inserted to your se phone and download some stuff it automatically saving onto memory card. Why not try and use opera mini 4.2 for browsing and downloading

it wont allow me to download opera mini, thats the problem.
i can download it on computer and transfer it but only opera mini site via phone browser can detect my right phone model. so i get the right download. The other download methods dont seem to have my phone model.

It doesn't matter if your phone is not listed. Download any that is similar to your phone. I do that and it does work.

im with o2-uk contract including unlimited internet.
