Urgent Help Needed XR2i 1990,

I have brought the car at the weekend all looked ok, a picture is in the neewbie thread. There was a knoking coming from it while i have been driving it around, so i took it into my local garage and when they got it up we were all shocked!

Im not very good with cars (aerospace man Razz) so forgive me if i do not use the correct terms

There are to main struts that come down from the chasi to hold the suspension, wishbone, steering etc together. They were pretty much none existant as they had corroded away. It should NOT of passed an MOT only 6 months ago.

So my question is do i sorce them from a scrap veichle or have the garage make new ones. As i am new to this club i dont have any contacts etc, so your help would be much much appreciated.

Lee

This was taken from what i posted on the XR Owners Club but had no response. So i resulted to good old esato

You could try scrapyards first. There is a place in Cannock,Staffordshire that just specialise in Fords. Got loads of parts for my Feista from them at decent prices. They do new and second hand. Will see if I can find the website address again for you.

Is this you?

Sounds like the car is stuffed. If you bought it from a dealer, take it back. If you bought it privately, then you're stuck with it unfortunately.

If the suspension mounting points are rusted then you have big problems, that will need some expert work to fix. Before you outlay any cash, ask yourself this - "Is this the only rust in the car?" I very much doubt it. Look everywhere, especially around the windscreen, sunrooof, interior of the boot (trunk) and the sills (below the doors). If there is more rust then the car is probably not worth fixing. If there's no more rust then you still need to get it fixed professionally as it is part of the structure of the car and directly affects your (and your passengers) safety. Post some pics of the rusted suspension if possible.

The smoky engine needs attention. It may be worn piston rings which means a full overhaul (ouch-$$$) but most likely it is simply worn valve guide seals, which is still major repair work and means time off the road and $$ spent.

You need to decide what purpose the car has. Is it to get you around as cheap as possible? This is the wrong car for that. Do you intend to fix it up and modify it? This car could be good for that but extensive rust will ruin that dream.
Decide what budget you have to spend on the car and try and stick to that. An XR2 should not be allowed to become a money-pit. There are plenty of alternative cars around.

It has been completely checked over by a garage and the only problem was that rust, as for the smoke the previous owner had way to much oil in it.

I had s budget of £1000 and paid only 300 for the far. I do not intend to modify it in any way, I have always just liked xr2s.....

I have had a quote of £200 for the job. Reasonable? I have some pictures I will upload later.

I understand.
I've owned a couple of my boyhood favourites too such as a 1983 Lancia HPE (fantastic to drive but terrible to own) and a 1986 Mitsubishi Sigma GSR Turbo (same as the NZ Police had). I'm sometimes tempted to track down a Lancia Delta Integrale but that would be a money-pit for sure. It'd take weeks to get the smile off my face though... A more sensible option would be a 2000YM Honda Integra Type R in Yellow, just like a friend of a friend used to drive in club racing, but they are rare in NZ and no-one wants to part with one.

That price sounds reasonable but you should investigate whether that is all it requires. In NZ, any structural repairs need to be inspected by a Qualified Engineer before painting or rustproofing coatings are applied. The Engineer issues a certificate which needs to be presented before a Warrant of Fitness (what you call an MOT) is passed. This all costs the equivalent of GBP150.00 . I don't know if the UK has similar requirements on structural repairs or not. A Wheel Alignment will tell you if the repair work has been done well by measuring whether the wheels are pointing in the right directions or not.

With too much oil in the engine I would be expecting to see oil leaks from all the front end seals which could deteriorate the cambelt. The excess oil was probably travelling into the engine intake via the PCV valve which if it wasn't stuffed before, probably is now. I'd certainly check whether the PCV valve is working okay, as it makes a big difference to the performance, driveability and economy of the engine. It is quite cheap and easy to replace if necessary.
