Huge dust storms have engulfed the city of Sydney turning the whole area into an orange dust cloud. The huge dust clouds have been driven into the city via strong winds and thunder storms in the out back. It has caused problems for airlines traffic and also people are having trouble breathing too. The fear now is the dust clouds may move to the great barrier reef. Just seen this on the news it looks pretty wierd cant imagine what its like. See www.bbc.co.uk/news Anyone down under experiencing this?

Is this the first time this has happened in Sydney?

no, its happened once in my life time, though not this bad.

Apparantly the last time it was this bad was in the 40's

it reminded me of the end of a mad max movie... can't remember which one but its where Bruce Spence flies Max and a load of kids into Sydney

I see made me wonder why it took everyone by surprise I assumed dust storms were quite common there since australia is almost 50% desert

yeah, but real desert is several hundred miles from Sydney... you've got 50 miles or so from Sydney to the Blue Mountains, and then after the Blue Mountains you have quite a distance to Broken Hill west of which you start getting desert.

I've personally flown light aircraft from Sydney to Ayers Rock over the Simpson Desert but that really is a long long way west of Sydney, so for this all to be blown that far is very very unusual

hasnt affected me since im in (the better city) Melbourne

winds of over 100km/h caused 'dust' from the desert to blanket Sydney! As masseur said, its quite a distance from sydney too (the desert)
