I'm sorry for the title, but I really think it's a load of BULL that SE won't release the API for the Communicam for "legal" purposes. EVERYONE, and I really do mean EVERYONE is coming up with mobile video cams... hell, even the Clie's all come with one already!!! All of Nokia's cam enabled phones can DL an app for video... Samsung's 3G has a real-time one built-in... and Sony's new BT enabled handycams can use a BT enabled celfone to transmit video!!!

WHAT THE HELL IS UP WITH SE's LAME EXCUSE?!?!?!?!?!

If the programmers at SE aren't smart enough to make a video app..FINE.. release the Communicam specs so others can come up with one!!!! DUH!

Sorry... just pissed when pathetic (and obviously false) excuses are being dished out.

I can think of a few REAL reasons,
It could be on a future model,
They may have tried it & it was crap,
Sony may have said NO F*CKING WAY,fearing loosing sales of digicams to it.

SE have made a lot of mistakes in the way they are treating developers.. they didn't even bother to modify the Symbian tutorials which are full of errors and irrelevant material to the p800..

On the other hand, I don't see what the big deal is with a video recorder? Why is everyone waiting/asking/requesting/hoping that a video app will be available? The quality will be extremely low, adding sound if any will dramatically reduce the quality, it will be too tiny and you won't be able to record more than 60 seconds at 1 frames per second (Okay I admit I'm exaggerating.. but you get the point)

Think about it this way.. if the P800 cam was meant for capturing video, SE would have already bundled the app for it..

I want it mainly for MMS purposes. The fact that the screen can handle approx 15fps is fine. Even if it'll only do 160x120 mpeg4 w/ AAC audio. The whole thing with this phone is the messaging... MMS, email, etc..etc... It would be nice to have a video cam (w/ audio) for messaging.

the MMS menu can handle animation w/ voice attachements... and 3GGP standards use mp4 w/ AAC for MMS services.

If 'quality' is the issue, the Communicam should've been scrapped a long time ago. Even at their best, these phone cams don't even give decent 'wallet' prints. So quality is obviously NOT the issue.

The fact that the Sony Clie's have 320x240 video cams built-in means that it's not competing against their handycam line (which offer almost broadcast quality video) ... and the quality on Clie vidcams isn't great either... so quality still isn't the issue, and neither is internal market competition.

Nokia, Samsung, Siemens & Motorola all have video capable mobile phones out... so it's obviously not a legal issue either... unless SE pissed off someone, somewhere...and only SE is banned from having a video cam on their phone.

So... none of your reasons would apply.

I agree with you jplacson. I thought they really have it? I'll definintely get disappointed if no video cam for P800.

um pics are horrible so why would u want a video camera with that quality? I mean I luv my P800, but i can't do ish without a flash with the camera. And I don't want to fill up my space with videos. so what if other phones have em? they are not that nice looking anyway. let's be real.

If u want a solid video camera and still camera in one then don't expect one in your phone for for a while. It is only going to make the price a lot higher and come on we are all paying too much for the p800 right now regardless.

just my $0.02
peace

Like I said, I don't mind that SE didn't have one BUILT-IN... but to not release the API code for OTHERS to develop one is really really stupid. I don't mind a 3rd party app... those who don't want or need it, don't have to buy it... those of us who want one, can. That's the whole point of an OPEN OS right???

Some of us would want nothing but games on the P800, others want Office suites... that doesn't mean SE should provide ALL the apps. I'm happy with the apps that they included...

BUT I am pissed that they won't allow 3rd party video cam apps. I'll buy the app cuz I want one... I don't expect SE to give it for free. I just want them to release the API so that the nice people who made the Nokia video cam (3rd party as well) can make one for the P800.

ok ok calm down tho because a guy at my-symbian is working on this right now. He is making a program that is similar to a screen capture program except it records video. so it can record what your P800 is showing u in your viewfinder. The reason it is not done is because he is trying to make a 3rd party sound recorder that will work simultaniously with it to record sound as well. it should work and it does not break any copyrights or anything and it does not use the actual camera. so just wait a while. people will find ways around it like this.

ya, I read about that app... I also read that there was an app (supposedly with the newer P800 kits) that records straight from the Communicam in animated GIF format for MMS purposes.

I'm looking forward to either one of these apps... but that still doesn't make me see WHY SE is claiming 'legal' problems with the Communicam API when EVERY OTHER MOBILE manufacturer has one on their new & upcoming models?!?!!?

Who did SE (or was it Sony) piss off???
