Well, you should have no problems updating the software if you follow on screen instructions... briefly, the benefits are bug fixes, sometimes improved speed, and possibly new camera/acoustic drivers... what you get really depends on model...

updates fixes previous firmware's bugs. if you're about to use SEUS it will tell you how to do it step by step.

Well for my G705, I went from W715 R1DA035 to G705 R1FA035 and the difference is night and day. There's some stuff that I don't like about the G705 firmwares, such as the shortcuts and soft buttons when you're on the home screen.

Anyways, aside from what the above two said, the new firmware also brought a new method of texting. It's still like T9, but much improved imo. Takes a bit of getting used to though.
