Just a thought. With google giving away its navigation software with android operating phones and perhaps in the future for other mobile operating systems, is paid for navigation software under threat?

I think the paid ones have a bit better features, but not enough for me to pay when I can just use free google maps on my Satio which is fantastic. As long as your phone has GPS google maps should be fine imo.

Looked at Link text...this video from Google and I read somewhere that both Garmin and Tom Tom's stocks fell the following day after release of Google's free navigation software.

If google keeps up this free thing including a good PC operating system only then would the web be great. Whats next, free internet connection every where.

I wouldn't be surprised to see a paid for version from Google. They are after all out to make money.

Not one to be cynical, but they can't keep doing this free forever without relying on some sort of payment options. Either through micro transactions for extra's or for a paid for software version that allows downloading of the maps from your home pc to your device so you don't need to have a constant data stream while your on the move.

I know you can download the maps already, but it's a real f**k on and it's not really official.

If they were to start a paid for version then they would end u[p competing with other manufacturers and I dont think that is what they want at all.
Like I said when this was announced the stock price of both garminn and tom tom fell on the news. Hopefully they keep it free.
