BBC article
Millions of Indian mobile phones with no valid unique identification code have been blocked for security reasons.
The absence of this number makes it impossible to trace either the caller or the phone or to access call details.
Indian intelligence agencies say phones without the code have been used in attacks by militant groups.
It is estimated that India has more than 25 million phones without codes.

And soon other countries are going to catch a drift of this and implement their own ban. The only feature that they have over branded phones is the analog TV receivers. But I'm totally for getting rid of KIRFs.

Yes, it is true that our goverment has implemented this rule from today. But i have not come across anybody with that kind of phone, at least my family and friend circle is using branded phones only.
Goverment has given fair amount of time to those having invalid IMEI no. phone by continuous advertisement in local news-paper joined by all branded phone companies and service providers.

Also those with invalid IMEI no. can get their phone registered by only paying Rs.200 i.e. 4 USD.
Little concern for me. As i dont have used any prototype phone before, my playtime draw prize is C903, which is prototype unit, not a retail unit. And i haven't received it yet. I am afraid whether my C903 will work normally or it will be just a show-piece. Though Mizzle has told me that i should not face any problem with that. But i am still worried. I have talked with my service provider, but he is also not sure about it.

Your proto should work just fine, unless you try installing some custom mods that aren't meant for it. I'm using a proto N95-2 on Vodafone in Bombay right now and it works like a charm.

Thanks gforce. So currently you are in mumbai.

so near.
What do you mean by custom mods? I dont think that custom cam drive or acoustic drive or lay-outs has any effect on IMEI no. Unless and until, if i change anything related to it, which is not available and if so, i am not going to try it.
Thanks and enjoy your stay in colourful country- INDIA.
EDIT- Just one question from my curiosity. Why proto phone should not register with its campany? Like i was told by someone that i should not register my C903 with sonyericsson. Why? Any reason?

Thanks.
I meant bricking the proto by installing weird mods, the IMEI won't change obviously.
