> Unlocked (Orange) t68i on US T-Mobile Pay as you go
Bookmark topic
Wonder if anyone can help.
I have recently relocated to the USA bringing my t68i with me from the UK Orange network. I am keeping my existing orange contract going and have paid Orange to unlock my phone.
In the US I have bought a pair of T-Mobile pay as you go phones.
I want to be able to use the SIM from my T-Mobile phone in my t68i. The problem I am seeing is that the phone keeps on selecting the Cingular network and I don't seem to be able to access T-Mobile.
When I look at the list of preferred networks I can see entries for T-Mobile D and T-Mobile UK which I assume are T-Mobile Deutchland and T-Mobile UK.
Is there anyway I can reconfigure the phone to see the T-Mobile US network? Or have I wasted 20 quid unlocking my beloved t68i?
Thanks in advance,
John

If you are in California your phone will roam in the Cingular network, as T-mobile has roaming agreements with them. Are you currently able to make calls with the T68 and the t-mobile prepaid card? Dial 611, customer service and they'll help you more.

I can make calls on Cingular using the t68, the problem seems to be that I can't recieve calls, and never seem to be able to get the phone to use the T-Mobile service even though there is good coverage. The phone just will not select the T-Mobile network. I guess its not one of the networks that the phone know about.
Does anyone know if the preferred networks can be altered on a t68i?

go to MENU>CONNECT>GSM NETWORKS>PREFERRED NETS> under "ADD NEW?" move joy stick up select "Other". Network codes: type 31016 or 31020 or 31021 or 31023 or 31024 or 31025 or 31026 or 31027. these code are t-mobile codes in the us. you may have to delete some old network code to accomodate all these new codes. hope this helps you

Ok I don't have an "Add New" under preferred nets, and I dont seem to be able to delete preferred nets, the phones says "deleted" but they remain in place.
Any other suggestions?

Since this was an Orange phone the software is Orange proprietary. I am guessing, and correct me anyone if I'm wrong, but a software upgrade should take care of that... Unfortunately being in the US.... kinda hard...

Whats the issue with software upgrades in the US?
I can't beleive such a simple, totally legal, use of a pay as you go SIM Card in an existing contract phone is soooo difficult. Guess I am going to have to carry the T-Mobile NOKIA Brick phone about with me for the next year

The issue is that they just dont do them... i dont know why... but SE aven before had no plans to bring the m-i upgrade in the US. I am guessing since generic phones here are rare, they dont need to do them. Most of the phones in the US are operator branded, and believe it or not, there's people that use cell phones from 1998-99. They dont change the plans, they dont upgrade the phones. The cell market only lately has begun to become somewhat interesting... but still there's a long way to go. But, since you are going to be here for a while it'd be in your interest to get a post pay plan. As far as I know T-mobile doesn't offer gprs in prepaid accounts. I dont know if that's something you're after.
Another thing you can do is search the forum for someone who does upgrades in the US. I've seen some posts from this guy in Las Vegas i think who does upgrades, unlocking and everything. Since a lot of people have done this he seems trustworthy. I'm not sure what his fees are though, but also he can tell you whether the software upgrade can be done to your phone (since it's orange branded) and if it'll actually fix your problem. Also, talk to t-mobile tech support, they're very good..
