What's FS, main, and custpack? For the FS and main, do they have to be from the same release?

FS means File System. These are the files that containing such as the driver of the camera(camdriver), the driver of sound(acoustic), the fonts, etc.

The MAIN is the core of the phone's operating system.

Well, here's a definition I found over se-nse.net:

FIRMWARE is the 'operating system' of your phone, it is divided into two parts; MAIN Firmware and FS (File System). The FS contains the system files that are required for operation of the phone itself, and the MAIN is the actual operating environment.

The custompack or custom:

After performing an FS flash, you do need to customise your phone. You do this by using custpacks. They contain languages and other important info...

If you don't customize the phone you will have a Configuration error message.

So what about using a MAIN and andFS from different releases? I want to flash my C905, but the only MAIN I found that's NAM was accompanied with a Rogers FS; can I use the NAM MAIN with an Americas FS from a different release?

Oh yes. But it would be better if you find a recent version.
