> What exactly is the purpose of unlocking T68i??

I'm using my T68i on Cingular in CA. Is there a benefit for me to unlock my phone? Sometimes when I do a "New Search" under GSM, AT&T shows up but I can't select it.
1. Will unlocking my phone allow me to use AT&T's network and will Cingular penalize me for using their network (ie., roaming charges, etc.)?
2. If I am able to use AT&t's network, does that extend my coverage?
3. Can I add AT&T to my "Preferred Nets" to use their network (or does the network lock need to be unlocked)?
4. I'm assuming unlocking is promarily for using your phone overseas, right?

a locked phone means it must use sim cards from a specific provider, in your case Cingular, an unlocked phone can be used on any network... but you still need a sim card from that provider to be able to access their network... so you can't use your Cingular sim card to use AT&T's network, even if your phone is unlocked.
you can still visit other countries with a locked phone, but your network provider must have roaming deals with the providers in the country you are visiting.

But AT&T won't give out SIM cards or let you sign up unless you buy a phone. I'm assuming same goes for other companies. So why bother unlocking it?
Is that all unlocking means? That I can use the phone with any carrier's SIM card as long as I manage to get one.

it's good when u may want to switch providers if u bought it subsidized, or if u wanna go to another country and dont want to pay roaming charges or whatever, u could just use another sim.

in other countries like UK it`s possible to get free (or a token price) sims from all the networks so it`s more usefull to have an unlocked phone here, also phones are becoming less subsidised by the networks at the time you sign a contract making buying a phone outright more cost effective than in times gone by.
Another reason to have an unlocked phone is if you plan to use a "twin sim" (a device that allows you to switch from one network to another) so take advantage of free minutes or to get the best signal in the area you happen to be in, it saves carrying more than one phone.
