> O2 Hoax Nike text costs £1.50 just to READ

Taken from O2's web site.......

Nike Hoax Text
It has come to light that text messages titled 'NIKE' have been sent some o2 customers, asking them to reply to a sporting question.
This text is a hoax and is charged at £1.50 just to open it and then a further £1.50 to reply to. Should you receive this message do not respond and therefore perpetuate the hoax.
O2 would like to apologise to any customers affected by this and any inconvenience that may have been caused.
What do people think of this? Can O2 really charge you £1.50 just for opening a text message that has been sent to you?
You would expect that O2 and the other mobile operators would be able to put some block in......but the question is how does it work?

As with most premium rate text messages you can be reversed charged for receiving/reading them. But what that messaging company did is illegal and will probably lose their licence over it. Deservedly so

How does that work?
is it only on O2 or could it happen on any network?

Surely you have to "sign up" for services like this, by sending a text to that provider which effectively says you agree to be reverse charged for future messages? If someone can send me a text out of the blue and O2 will charge me £1.50 to open it when I haven't even asked for the service then that is a disgrace!

You would have to sign up for something like that, which is what is going to land them in a big ol heap of shit!
