Mobile phone maker Sony Ericsson posts Q1 profit

Associated Press, 04.16.10, 02:43 AM EDT

STOCKHOLM -- Mobile phone maker SonyEricsson has posted a net profit for the first quarter, boosted by product launches as well as company cost savings.

Friday's report showed an unexpected gain for the first three months of 2010, with net profits reaching euro21 million ($29 million), up from a previous loss of euro293 million in the same quarter a year ago.

Although sales dipped in the period, to euro1.4 billion from euro1.74 billion, the gross margin of the LM Ericsson and Sony Corp. joint venture jumped to 30.6 percent from a previous 8.4 percent.

Falling operating costs also helped bump up bottom-line figures, dropping to euro423 million from euro528 million.

The group said it shipped 10.5 million units in the quarter

I still can't believe it! I remember writing that I expected a small loss close to break even this quarter and a small profit or break even result next quarter but they have defied the odds on this one.

Give people what they want and you will be rewarded. People have been clamouring for high end products (without bugs, please SE) for a long time now and finally SE listened and look at them. I bet it's all smiles in the office today.

With the next releases (X10 mini, pro, Vivaz pro, ugly betty Aspen and the Elms and cousin) Q2 looks pretty rosy for them.

Now, how about some innovation of the old SE?

Just don't rest on your laurels once again!!

Congratulations and well done!

I never expected them to get back in the black till Q4 to tell you the truth. Vivaz seems to be doing well and the X10 is available everywhere and getting positive reviews from those that have bought the phone so things are starting to look up.

I see Q2 as a bumper quarter in terms of profits. The X10 in particular is likely to have a storming Q2 helped by its two sidekicks.

If I were SE I would release the rumoured touch walkman in Q3, then Satio's successor in Q4 alongside the Xperia windows 7 phone.

This part is my wish: a P1i/Aspen type Android phone to help the walkman phone. Come to think of it, the walkman phone is the flagship for this year so how about its sibling like it used to be with the P and walkman series?

Hmmm... maybe I'm not too far off, maybe there is a chance of me getting my P1i replacement.
